What do we do?

CCentre retouchedMeetings are held two or three times a month on a Wednesday evening at the Auditorium of the SAAO in Observatory, Cape Town.

At our regular meetings there are presentations, talks, discussions and demonstrations offering  opportunities for our  members to exchange ideas and learn from one another.  Many of the talks are presented by professional astronomers, physicists and cosmologists associated among others with the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), local universities, and the offices of the SKA

In addition:

    • we arrange events to mark special events and excursions to places of interest
    • we arrange observing evenings or weekends
    • our library is available to all members
    • we have a limited amount of astronomical equipment available to rent to members
    • we provide support to some of the outreach and educational activities of the SAAO  and other institutions and organisations, such as the Iziko Planetarium in Cape Town and various observing groups
    • we occasionally organise social events and family evenings
